Requiem for the Fallen

How long with this go on, this endless cycle of violence?
How many people will lose their lives to needless amounts of bloodshed?
Why is nothing being done to stop it? I don’t understand
Confusion and heartbreak plague America’s mind

Many people scatter in fear when the popping sound starts
Some survive and some don’t make it in time
One lone person acting on nothing but a cold-blooded mind
Why does this happen too often?

Our hearts are wounded and minds are destroyed
Innocence taken from children way too early
The death toll rises by the minute
When will the violence end?

Children cry and people are left grieving
For loved ones taken in a senseless act of murder
We have to stop this now before it goes out of control
Too many have died this year
We can end it all if we only tried

From mosques in Wisconsin to a school in Connecticut
Violence in places unnecessary occurs without warning
What causes these people to lose their humanity?
This world we’re living in is worse than the fires of Hell

Hearts are bleeding and the wounds remain
Tears are shed for those who are no longer here
Time has stopped for those caught in the crossfire
Gone before they’ve had a chance to truly live

Children scream and their parents hold them tight
Relieved to see them alive and breathing
And they comfort their friends who’ve lost someone so dear
Why have so many died this year?
Why aren’t we doing anything to stop this violence now?

Do our Congressmen and women just not care?
They’re alive while others are slowly dying
Think about if your children were in their place
Would you hesitate or would you protect them?

Let’s mend our hearts and help the wounds to heal
We’ll come together as a nation from this tragedy
No matter what, we’ll always have each other
To hold and to share our sorrow and pain

Never again will any child cry from a tragedy
Caused by a person who has lost their humanity
No more tears will be shed on senseless violence
We can stop this violence if we only try
So why aren’t we trying harder than we are now?

My heart goes out to the victims who have passed away
From the acts of murder that have occurred during the year
These acts have sent these murderers to damnation
Let our hearts unite and our love spread across the nation
We can stop this violence if we only try
